Our expression platform uses Nicotiana benthamiana plants, which is the most widely used experimental host in plant virology, due mainly to the large number of viruses that can successfully infect it.
The natural cell process of Nicotiana benthamiana is therefore temporarily exploited to produce a wide variety of recombinant proteins.
How does it work?
We construct a code that contains genetic instructions that our plants can ‘read’, and we insert it into agrobacteria that carries the information into the plant’s cells.
The plants are immersed in an Agrobacterium suspension. Using a vacuum, the air between the plant cells is sucked out. The plants then act like sponges, absorbing the agrobacterium suspension
The plants are placed for 5 to 6 days in a carefully controlled environment so that they can continue to grow. During this period the plants quickly produce large quantities of the desired protein
After the growing phase, we harvest the plant leaves, turn them into a liquid , and add a buffer solution to extract the desired protein
The protein is then filtered and purified according to industry-standard protocol, before finishing the biologic in its final form
